Kon-Tiki 2017 - Local is Lekker!

This past weekend marked the 39th Annual Kon-Tiki Event which took

The Raft Crew

place at the Sea Scout Base in Zandvlei. This is the biggest Scouting Competition in the Western Cape and this year saw just under 1000 young people taking part. The object of the competition is for each Raft Crew (made up of 6 Scouts or Girl Guides) to build a raft using pioneering methods (i.e. rope, wood, barrels only, no nails etc.) that the team will be able to stay on for 24hrs.

Every year sees a new theme and this year's theme was Local is Lekker! The theme dictates the raft and costume design. While on the raft, the crew are given tasks to do, some of these include cooking a meal for the judges, making 3D models of the landscape and much, much more. Each task in the event is strictly evaluated by the judges. There are also Fringe Teams who compete in land competitions, such as tug-of-war, kneeboarding races and volleyball among others.

A big congratulations to 1st Bergvliet who came first this year. We placed 5th out of 31 Teams! From 17th place last year, this is quite a feat.

Congratulations to the team and the fantastic support from families and Scouters. A lot of hard work was put in to making this year's Kon-Tiki a success. We can't wait for the next one!
