A New Cub Mom's Account of the District Cub Hike 2017

As a new Cub mom, I was very interested in the upcoming hike with the 1st Muizenberg Pack that took place on Saturday 26th August 2017. We are a family of Hiking Enthusiasts and love going out in a group!

Well, all I can say is, what an amazing experience! Not only did the 1st Muizenberg Cubs attend, but we were joined by several other groups from the District, as well as further afield, making us a rather large Pack trekking up the mountain.

We met at the Echo Valley entrance at 12:30 on Boyes Drive just above Kalk Bay and there was much excitement within the group. Departing at 12:45, with a well organised hike leader at the front, we started up the mountain. We took a few breaks along the way for everyone to catch up and have a bite to eat, which was a relief to some.

Once we reached the entrance to the Boomslang Cave, we broke up into our Cub groups and entered. We had to crawl through the entrance to get through. Some of us had to leopard crawl! But what an incredible journey! We climbed right through the mountain and ended up overlooking Fish Hoek and Clovelly. There were one or two fearful yelps from our Cubs on the way, but their sense of adventure took over (as well as some kind words and support from a Cub grandfather) and we made it through.

We regrouped on the other side once everyone had come through and started our journey up and over the top, filling the path that led us through the Echo Valley and down again.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all involved, including the parents that joined us. What a wonderful day out. And before I forget, I must mention that the Scout Leaders were amazing and completely on the ball. Not only did they ensure our safety, but the Cubs enjoyed several lessons on the way, including interesting facts about plants as well as what safety measures to take when hiking and more.

All in all, it was a fantastic hike and took us just under 5 and half hours. We can't wait for the next one!
