1st Muizenberg at MAC 24 - 2017

Ah… MAC 24, one of the most tiring competitions of the year! But still probably the most fun a Scout could have, and this year was no different.

We all arrived at Rietvlei ready to go, and after a few mishaps, had a perfectly rigged boat and the tents set up (which may or may not have been packed with the wrong tent poles).

We had a glorious start to the competition, filled with good old Disney songs that were sung at the top of our lungs to keep our spirits up. We even made a few parodies that were definitely worthy enough to be on the radio.

As the sun was beginning to go down, so were our body temperatures out on the boat. It was probably colder than my mom’s freezer out there! Gabby did the honour of decorating the boat from head to toe in glow sticks which soon had our boat nicknamed by other sailors as the “Rave Ship”. Speaking of other sailors, we made many friends out on the water, including Eddie and Russel from the Navy (I’m yet to meet these sailors on land) who kept us entertained throughout the night. And not to forget old Stan, the lonely man from Blaauwberg, who kept popping up every now and again.

Unfortunately for us we were not allowed to tape down a toilet to boat number 22 so desperate times called for desperate measures. Let’s just say that what happened on the boat stayed on the boat!

As the Sun finally returned over the horizon, so did our voices and at about six in the morning we decided to do everyone on the land a favour and acted as their personal alarm clock. Seriously now, who wouldn’t want to wake up to the croaky voices of young Scouts belting out Hakuna Matata at the top of their lungs?

As the competition drew to a close, the awesome Muizenberg crew finally made use of the water cannons and had a water fight with not only Blaauwberg (who resorted to using their bailers as a defense force) but also Plumstead and Bergvliet (who decided to throw a half-eaten apple at us as their defense force).

Overall it was a fantastic competition and any Scout who would be interested in joining next year should definitely attend.

We only had two Helmsmen, but we went with a positive attitude to just have fun. I can definitely confirm that two days after the competition, I’m still recovering from all the fun we had. I look forward to the next one!
